The Olfactometer for Entomological Research is a comprehensive experimental setup engineered to evaluate insect olfactory behavior under highly controlled laboratory conditions. Built around a precision Y-tube glass assembly, the system allows insects to choose between two odor sources, enabling accurate analysis of attraction, repellency, and preference.
The Y-tube features a 10 mm diameter stem and two 10 mm diameter arms, ensuring uniform airflow and minimizing turbulence that could influence insect movement. High-quality PTFE air connectors and silicone tubing provide chemical inertness, preventing contamination or adsorption of volatile compounds.
An air pump specifically matched to Y-tube requirements delivers consistent airflow, while two precision air flow control meters (0.1–1 LPM each) allow independent regulation of airflow through each arm of the Y-tube. This ensures symmetrical and reproducible experimental conditions.
The system includes two glass jars for air purification and humidification, which remove unwanted VOCs and condition the air to maintain insect viability and natural behavior. Each jar is designed with a merged inlet and outlet single-head configuration for simplified connections and reduced leakage.
Additionally, two glass volatile collection jars, also equipped with single-head merged inlet and outlet ports, allow controlled introduction of odor sources or collection of emitted volatiles during experiments.
This olfactometer setup is widely used in entomology, chemical ecology, pest management research, behavioral studies, and insect–plant interaction analysis.
