Larval Collection Dipper for mosquito larval sampling
The entoWIZ Field Larval Dipper is designed for efficient mosquito larval sampling in the field. Crafted from high-quality plastic, the off-white dipper features a wide-mouth design on both sides, allowing for easy collection of larvae. Its pure white inner surface enhances visibility, making it easier to observe and sort collected specimens.
This dipper comes with a durable fixed-length aluminum handle, typically 60 cm in length, ideal for standard field use. Optional handle upgrades are available:
Fixed-length handle: 60–90 cm (default: 60 cm)
Three-segment telescopic aluminum handle:
Length option 1: 53–107 cm
Length option 2: 61–141 cm
Length option 3: Maximum of 200 cm. This is used when collections are expected from deep waters like water tanks, sewer deep tanks, or other difficult to reach areas. Note that this option will produce a inconvenient length of the laddle when retracted. Can't be easily fit into carry bag.
(Available at additional cost)
A complete larval collection kit can be purchased separately.
entoWIZ Mosquito Larval Collection Dipper
The entoWIZ Mosquito Larval Collection Dipper is an essential tool for entomologists, public health professionals, and vector control teams engaged in mosquito surveillance and control programs. Designed for efficient collection of mosquito larvae, this dipper aids in monitoring populations of disease vectors such as Aedes aegypti, Aedes albopictus, and Culex species, which are responsible for transmitting diseases like dengue, chikungunya, Zika, and West Nile virus.
🔬 Product Overview
Crafted from high-quality, off-white plastic, the entoWIZ dipper features a wide-mouth design on both sides, facilitating easy collection of larvae from various aquatic habitats. The pure white interior provides a contrasting background, enhancing visibility for accurate identification and sampling of larvae. Variants are listed above in short description.
🦟 Importance in Mosquito Surveillance
Regular larval surveillance is a cornerstone of integrated mosquito management programs. By accurately identifying breeding sites and assessing larval densities, public health officials can implement timely and targeted control measures. The entoWIZ dipper enables efficient sampling in diverse habitats, including urban containers, natural water bodies, and vegetated areas.
For instance, Aedes species, known for breeding in artificial containers, are primary vectors for dengue and chikungunya. Monitoring their larval stages helps in predicting outbreaks and evaluating control strategies. Similarly, Culex species, which breed in polluted water, are vectors for West Nile virus, and their surveillance is crucial for public health interventions.
🌿 Field Sampling Techniques
Effective larval collection requires specific techniques tailored to mosquito species and their habitats:
Skimming: For Anopheles larvae near the water surface, gently skim the dipper just below the surface to collect specimens without disturbing them.
Chopping: For Culex and Aedes larvae that dive when disturbed, use a quick, downward motion to capture them before they escape.
Scraping: For species like Coquillettidia that attach to submerged vegetation, scrape the dipper against plant stems to dislodge and collect larvae.
Perfect for entomologists and field researchers, this dipper is a reliable tool for mosquito surveillance and larval habitat assessment.
