The Automatic Larval Collection and Transfer System – Variable-Speed Vacuum Controller is a vacuum-assisted collection device developed to simplify the collection and transfer of insect larvae in laboratory and insect-rearing environments.

The system uses a variable-speed vacuum pump to generate adjustable suction, enabling users to control the collection process according to their requirements. A vacuum-sealed collection bottle serves as an intermediate collection chamber, while two separate tubes provide the vacuum connection and larval collection pathway.

This arrangement helps users collect larvae into a dedicated container and subsequently transfer the collected material to another container or rearing vessel.

The system is suitable for laboratories, insectaries, entomology research facilities, and institutions involved in insect handling and rearing. Its suitability for a particular larval species and developmental stage should be confirmed through application-specific testing.

Working Principle

The system operates using controlled vacuum suction.

Step 1: Vacuum Generation

The vacuum pump generates suction. Its variable-speed controller allows the operator to adjust the suction level according to the collection requirements.

Step 2: Vacuum Connection

The 40 cm PTFE/Teflon tube connects the vacuum pump to one opening of the vacuum-sealed collection bottle.

Step 3: Larval Collection

The 60 cm silicone tube connects the second opening of the bottle to the collection point. The applied suction draws larvae through this tube into the collection bottle.

Step 4: Collection and Transfer

The larvae accumulate inside the collection bottle, allowing them to be handled and transferred to another container as required.

The actual suction level, collection efficiency, and suitability for different larval species depend on the operating settings, tube dimensions, and characteristics of the larvae. Appropriate testing is recommended before routine use.

Main Components

1. Variable-Speed Vacuum Pump

The vacuum pump supplies the suction required for larval collection. The system is available with a choice of 6 LPM or 14 LPM pump capacity, allowing users to select a configuration according to their intended application.

The onboard speed control enables adjustment of suction speed, while the integrated ON/OFF switch provides convenient operation. The pump accepts either 110 VAC or 230 VAC input, depending on the selected electrical configuration, and includes fuse protection.

2. Vacuum-Sealed Larval Collection Bottle

The collection bottle has an approximate capacity of 1000 mL and features two openings for connecting the vacuum line and larval collection tube.

The bottle serves as the collection chamber, separating the collected larvae from the vacuum pump. This configuration supports convenient collection and handling.

One collection bottle is included as standard. Additional compatible bottles can be purchased separately to support workflows that require multiple collection containers.

Before use, ensure that the bottle, lid, seals, and connections are suitable for the intended vacuum level. Do not use a container that is not rated for the applied vacuum.

3. PTFE/Teflon Vacuum Tube

The 40 cm PTFE/Teflon tube connects the vacuum pump to the collection bottle.

Its primary function is to transmit suction from the pump to the bottle. PTFE tubing is generally valued for its chemical resistance and low-friction surface.
