
Human Decoy Trap HDT for capturing mosquito samples for research
The Human Decoy Trap (HDT) is a scientifically engineered mosquito trap designed to mimic key visual, olfactory, and thermal cues of a human host. The HDT is proven to capture large numbers of anthropophilic mosquitoes, such as Anopheles, Aedes, and Culex species, using an ethical, non-contact method.
Unlike conventional light or CO₂ traps, the HDT uses high-contrast visual cues, host scent from a protected sleeping human, and adhesive-coated transparent film to trap mosquitoes as they land. This makes it especially effective for outdoor and semi-field entomological surveillance programs, offering a near real-world representation of mosquito host-seeking behavior without risking human exposure.

Human Decoy Trap or Host Decoy Trap is used to mitigate the negative effects of use of human landing collections for mosquito surveillance. The human scent and other body odor cues are transported in a pipe from source to the trap which is installed out side of the human or animal dwelling. The transported cues act as attractant to lure mosquitoes. The outside of the trap is circled with a glue tape to collection mosquitoes.
In this case, you probably won't be able to get live insects or samples for establishing laboratory colonies. This method of sample collection very much ideal for studying entomological parameters except collecting live insects.
The HDT is the only scientifically validated outdoor mosquito trap designed to simulate a human host across multiple sensory modalities—making it the closest, safest, and most ethical substitute for direct human baiting in mosquito surveillance.

Transparent adhesive cylinder made with Fics Film or equivalent, forming a 45 cm tall × 38 cm diameter cylindrical trap.

Host odor system: Uses air extracted from a human-occupied tent via a 0.38 A, 12V fan (~2000 L/min) through a 10 m × 25 cm flexible tubing, vented 10–15 cm near the trap’s base.
Mosquitoes are captured as they land and stick to the transparent adhesive film, mimicking human skin visually and thermally.
